South Australia's housing pipeline is stronger than ever, with approvals, commencements and homes under construction each exceeding 15,000 in the same year for the first time on record.

According to this week’s ABS Building Activity data, a record 15,403 homes commenced construction in South Australia in the year to June 2026.

That is up 16.3 per cent from the 13,240 homes commenced in the year to June 2025, and 35.2 per cent higher from the 11,392 commenced in the year to June 2024, before the State Government’s Housing Roadmap was released.

There were 15,880 homes under construction across the state at the end of June, up 12.2 per cent from the 14,157 recorded a year earlier and the highest number on record.

This follows ABS Building Approvals data released last week, which showed 15,874 dwellings were approved in the 12 months to August.

The pipeline is translating into finished homes, with 13,738 homes completed in the year to June 2026, exceeding the target of 13,500 homes a year.

Completions are up 6.6 per cent from the 12,887 homes completed in the year to June 2025, and 23.1 per cent higher from the 11,160 completed in the year to June 2024.

It is the third quarter in a row that South Australia's annual completions have been above the 13,500 target.

The target was set ahead of this year's state election, outlining the need for 13,500 homes to be built year after year for South Australia to deliver on the generational economic opportunities before the state.

These numbers are the direct result of the Housing Roadmap (June 2024), which has driven investment in infrastructure and the construction workforce, coupled with planning reforms and land releases, to lift the state's capacity to build homes.
