More homes were completed in South Australia in the year to March 2026 than in any other year on record, comfortably surpassing the State Government's target of 13,500 homes a year as the Government's housing reforms continue to deliver.
According to the latest ABS Building Activity Data, 14,130 homes were completed in South Australia in the year ending March 2026, up 16.5 per cent from 12,131 completed in the year to March 2025, and the highest annual total ever recorded.
South Australia is completely outpacing the rest of the nation, recording 16.2 per cent growth in completions over the year to March 2026, the only state or territory to record growth at all, while every other state went backwards.
Dwelling commencements also surged, with 14,893 homes commencing construction in the year to March 2026, a 15.2 per cent increase on the 12,923 recorded a year earlier.
The number of homes under construction in South Australia climbed to 15,605, up 4.9 per cent on the 14,878 recorded in the year to March 2025, reflecting a pipeline that continues to build on itself. This pipeline is further supported by the positive results for Building approvals, that were released last week.
These result builds on the momentum generated by the Housing Roadmap, which has driven planning reforms, land releases and workforce investment to lift the state's building pace.
The Government's re-election commitment of a further $1 billion to fast-track strategic land and apartment development, alongside continued investment in public housing renewal and training tradies, is designed to keep completions climbing in the years ahead.
