The State Government’s policy to increase housing supply has resulted in a year-on-year surge in the number of building approvals.

According to ABS data released yesterday, approvals for all dwellings in October increased by 12.6% over the year since October 2024 – to reach 14,878 new homes approved.

When comparing the year ending October 2024 to October 2025, there is a 23.8% increase from 12,015 approvals to 14,878 approvals.

There was also a bump in approvals month-to-month, with a total of 1,256 more homes for South Australians approved, a 11.1% increase compared with September 2025.

South Australia continues to outperform the nation in building approvals, with our increases sitting in contrast to a national drop in approvals of 6.4% since September, and a drop of 1.8% year-on-year.

South Australia’s performance bucked a negative trend seen in other states, with New South Wales and Victoria recording a month-to-month drop of 20.6% and 24.7% respectively.

The ABS data is reflective of industry groups like the Housing Industry Association and the Business Council of Australia consistently ranking the South Australian Government’s housing and planning policies as the best in the nation.

Approvals on private ‘other’ dwellings – such as apartments – surged by 54% during October to be 117% higher than a year earlier.

The pre-sale guarantee fund goes hand-in-hand with the announcement of a transformative partnership with Adelaide Airport to significantly raise building heights in the Adelaide CBD.

Last month, the State Government announced a massive 700 home, $900 million, four-tower precinct in the Adelaide CBD’s East End.
