South Australia's annual home approvals have risen again to their highest level in more than 40 years, as the state government's housing reforms continue to deliver.

According to ABS Building Approvals data, 15,211 dwellings were approved in South Australia in the 12 months to June 2026, a 4.4 per cent increase (or 648 additional homes) on the 14,563 approvals recorded in the year to June 2025.

It is the strongest annual result recorded in this state since last month’s figures (15,176 in the year to May 2026), which marked the best results since 1985.

A total of 1,310 homes were approved in June 2026, 17 per cent above South Australia's four-year monthly average of 1,118 approvals.

June's result follows an exceptional home approval results in May, which was one of the largest single months of home approvals on record outside the COVID-era HomeBuilder period.

The record number of homes being approved complements the record number of homes under construction and being completed in South Australia, demonstrating a pipeline of housing growth.

The ABS Building Activity data released earlier this month showed more homes were completed in South Australia in the year to March 2026 than in any other year on record, with 14,130 homes completed.

To achieve South Australia’s economic potential, the state government has set a target of 13,500 home completions annually.

The sustained lift in approvals follows the release of the Premier's Housing Roadmap in 2024, which set out a major policy effort, including streamlined planning approvals to record infrastructure investment, to get more homes built for South Australians in the right locations, faster.
